How many lymphatic drainage sessions do I need after liposuction?

When to start, how often, and how many sessions are usually recommended after liposuction, and why your surgeon always has the final say.

Therapist's hands during lymphatic drainage

After liposuction, the body reacts as it does to any procedure: it swells, holds on to fluid, and the tissues need time to settle into their new shape. Manual lymphatic drainage is one of the most commonly recommended treatments at this stage, and the question we hear most often is always the same: how many sessions will I need?

The short answer is that it depends on the procedure, on your body and on your surgeon's advice. But there are common patterns that help you plan, and that is what we explain here.

What lymphatic drainage does after surgery

The lymphatic system collects excess fluid from the tissues and returns it to the circulation. After liposuction, the treated area builds up oedema (swelling) and the lymphatic system is working overtime. Manual drainage, with slow, gentle and rhythmic movements, helps guide that fluid towards the lymph nodes so the body can clear it.

In practice, many patients notice less tightness, less swelling and skin that adapts better. It also helps spot areas that are hardening early, so you can mention them to your surgeon.

When do you start?

Your surgeon decides. After many body procedures, treatment starts within the first days, with very light pressure that respects the operated area. Other surgeons prefer to wait a little longer. That is why we never begin without knowing their instructions and how long it has been since surgery.

If you have your procedure in Marbella or come to recover on the Costa del Sol, clinics often recommend starting while you are still here. Having it at your accommodation saves you travelling on the days when moving is hardest.

How many sessions are usually recommended

As a general guide, 10 to 20 sessions are often recommended after liposuction. A common plan looks like this:

  • First two weeks: very frequent sessions, often daily or every other day, when swelling is at its peak.

  • Weeks three to five: two or three sessions a week while the inflammation settles.

  • Afterwards: one session a week or every fortnight until your surgeon feels it is no longer needed.

Smaller liposuction may need fewer sessions. If several areas are combined, or it is liposculpture or a tummy tuck, you will usually need more. What matters is not the exact number but consistency in the first weeks.

What changes the number of sessions

  • How large the treated area is and whether several areas were treated together.

  • Your tendency to retain fluid and your circulation.

  • Wearing your compression garment correctly.

  • Hydration, rest and the gentle activity your surgeon allows.

  • Any firmer areas (fibrosis), which should be monitored.

What a home session is like

When we arrive, we check how you feel and review your surgeon's instructions. We help you take off and put back on your garment, work in whichever position is most comfortable, and adapt the pressure to your stage of recovery. The session lasts about an hour and we finish with simple tips for the rest of the day.

You can read more about the service on our post-surgery lymphatic drainage page, where we also explain our multi-session packages.

Signs to tell your surgeon about

Drainage is a complementary treatment and does not replace medical follow-up. If you notice fever, pain that gets worse rather than better, intense redness, heat in the area or swelling in one leg only, contact your surgeon before your next session.

In short

After liposuction, 10 to 20 lymphatic drainage sessions are typical, very frequent at first and more spaced out later. Start when your surgeon says so, stay consistent in the first weeks, and combine it with your garment, hydration and rest.

If you are in Marbella or nearby, we can support you at home throughout your recovery. Book your first session or tell us about your case on WhatsApp.
